Italy Hotels and Chains Report 2022

Horwath HTL Italy is pleased to release the Italy Hotels & Chains Report 2022. The industry benchmark for Italian hotel brand offerings is now in its 9th edition.

This year’s census highlights the first consequences of the pandemic on the Italian hotel chain’s supply in terms of room inventory, including existing and pipeline properties, and preferred business models.

The supply trends observed in previous years have therefore accelerated, supporting the consolidation of the hotel landscape in Italy and, consequently, strengthening the international competitiveness of the Italian hotel supply.

The report features updated hotel chain rankings, and key highlights include:

  • The total hotel stock (still the largest in Europe) has decreased, leading to an increase in the penetration rate of international hotel chains;
  • International brands gained ground over national brands, reaching a total of 645 hotels (+26 properties), compared to a drop to 1,191 properties (-15 hotels) for national chains;
  • 8 new hotel brands entered the market, driven by international operators;
  • Sun & Beach destinations, still dominated by domestic brands, have seen their offer of international brands increase. This trend is confirmed and will continue in the years to come;
  • By the end of 2024, 21,450 additional branded rooms are expected to open, nearly 50% of them at the upscale level. Leases continue to confirm their dominance over other hotel business models, while the “owner-operator” model has seen a sharp drop in the pipeline compared to last year’s census.
